Prototype Information

The East Japan Railway Company introduced the E8 series Shinkansen in 2024 to succeed the E3 series. It operates as a 7-car formation between Utsunomiya and Fukushima on the Yamagata Shinkansen line at speeds up to 300km/h (186mph). The Yamagata Shinkansen line operates on a route that was re-gauged from Japan's typical narrow gauge (3ft 6in) to the more standard 4ft 8.5in gauge used around the world and in Japan for other Shinkansen services. Other normal trains share this route, which led to the Yamagata Shinkansen receiving an information "mini-Shinkansen" designation.
