Some of JR Freight's DD51 series locomotives underwent renovation work in the 2000s. Units that underwent renovation were initially painted in a blue base. Units that underwent renovation work after 2004 were given a new red-based color scheme, and the blue-painted vehicles were also gradually changed to the new color scheme by around 2010.
