Prototype Information

The West Japan Railway Company began operating various "Hikari" services in 1988 with special versions of various Shinkansen rolling stock, including 0 series and 100 series variations. Among these services, the Hikari Rail Star began running in 2000 with a specially equipped 700-7000 series 8-car trainset wearing a unique dark gray and yellow livery. Today, these sets operate the full length of the Sanyo Shinkansen line between Hakata station in Fukuoka and Shin-Osaka station at speeds up to 285km/h (177mph).
