Prototype Information
The West Japan Railway Company developed the 500 series Shinkansen in the 1990s for high-speed Nozomi superexpress service between Tokyo and Fukuoka to succeed the older 300 series sets in use at that time. The 500 series improved on older equipment with a more aerodynamic design, more advanced technology and increased passenger comfort. As designed, the full 16-unit prototype trainset could reach speeds of 320km/h (~199mph). However, in normal Nozomi service, the nine sets were restricted to 300km/h (~186mph). In 2010, JR West withdrew the 500 series trainsets from Nozomi service, shortened them from 16 cars to eight, and placed eight of the nine sets on Kodama (all stops) service on the San-yo Shinkansen between Hakata station in Fukuoka and Shin-Osaka station. In eight-car Kodama formation, the 500 series is limited to 285km/h (177mph). JR West plans to retire its remaining 500 series trainsets by January 2027.
