The 500 series improved on older equipment with a more aerodynamic design, more advanced technology and increased passenger comfort. As designed, the full 16-unit prototype trainset could reach speeds of 320km\/h (~199mph). However, in normal Nozomi service, the nine sets were restricted to 300km\/h (~186mph).
