During the early years of the industry freight was hauled on simple flatcars or early gondolas. In Upstate New York was the burgeoning Mohawk & Hudson Railroad, the first chartered system in the United States which later became part of the New York Central, came up with the novel idea of covering its gondolas in 1833 since the railroad dealt with snow throughout much of the winter. The car’s development continued to improve over the years such as switching from basic wood construction with steel outside-bracing, within the same size specifications; 40 feet, a standard size employed by the American Association of Railroads (AAR). To better enhance crew safety, in 1968 the AAR legislated the removal of roof walks. The 40 foot boxcars needed to be “modernized” to adhere to the AAR mandate. This was to be completed by 1978 for cars in interchange service. Some of these cars had side and end ladders cut down, in some cases, modification included lowering the brakewheel. What made boxcars great, at least in the eyes of the railroads, was, their ability to haul about anything! The first GLa hoppers were built in 1904. By the time this construction had stopped, the PRR had built nearly 30,000 cars for its own use. These cars had long service lives, with more than 7,000 still in interchange service in 1960. Nearly 200 remained as late as 1965. These cars were built to nearly identical designs, the primary difference being in the ends used. The 3900 cars in the earlier B-50-15 class used corrugated steel ends, while the 1003 cars in class B-50-16 used “Dreadnaught” ends. Both groups of cars used a variety of different roofs, with the Murphy radial roof and the Viking roof being the most common. In fact, nearly all B-50-16 received Viking roofs. Most of these cars were delivered with T-section trucks, though many were later upgraded with “Bettendorf”-style trucks.

Starting in the 1930s the Southern Pacific started a program of re-siding cars in both classes, replacing the wooden sides with steel sheet sides inside of the side bracing. A product of Bethlehem Steel Company’s (BSC) Johnstown, PA plant, over 9,000 of these (89’ 8” over the strikers) cars were built throughout the 1960s. Visually distinctive from other long flatcars of their era thanks to their “C” channel side sills, these versatile cars were adapted for many types of service and loadings over the years, ranging from Trailer-On-Flatcar (TOFC), to autoracks, to structural steel loading. While the majority went to Trailer Train, many were built for various railroads, typically for autorack service. In service with Trailer Train, the three or four-letter reporting marks indicated the cars’ intended service and corresponding equipment. For example, an “XTTX” car was equipped with four collapsible hitches, capable of carrying various combinations of 28’, 40’, or 45’ trailers. A car in the “RTTX” configuration featured a pair of fixed hitches at the ends, and a retractable hitch amidships, allowing it to carry a pair of long (up to 45’) trailers back-to-back, or three 28’ “pup” trailers.

Operationally, these cars are appropriate for any layout set from the 1960s to the present day. In TOFC service, F89Fs could be found mixed into manifest trains, or as part of dedicated TOFC trains. It also wasn’t uncommon to find them mixed into stack trains, alongside such cars as Gunderson Maxi-Is or Maxi-IIIs, which are also available from Athearn. The new F89F also goes great with Athearn’s extensive line of 40’, 45’, and 53’ trailers, not to mention our various 20’, 40’, 45’, 48’, and 53’ containers mounted on chassis, all of which are available in many different paint schemes to appeal to modelers of all eras.

F89-F89’8” TOFC FLAT MODEL FEATURES:

Raised and lowered hitches included

Die-cast body

Detailed deck

Separately applied brake ratchet, wire grab irons and ladders

Machined metal wheels with RP25 contours

Body-mounted McHenry® operating scale knuckle couplers

Screw mounted trucks for accurate tracking

Hitches fit Athearn N-scale trailers

Weighted for optimum performance

Use for dedicated intermodal trains or mixed freight

Minimum radius: 9 ¾”—Recommended radius: 11”+

40’ Z-VAN REEFER TRAILER MODEL FEATURES:

Separately applied mud flaps

Rubber tires

Beaded side body

Interchangeable landing gear (raised or lowered)

Fully-assembled and ready to use out of the box

Razor-sharp printing and painting

Painted and printed for realistic decoration

PROTOTYPE HISTORY:

Introduced in the early 1960s, the Trailer Train (now TTX Company) F89F flatcar has been a mainstay of contemporary railroading. PS responded to increasing demand for efficiency by the railroads and shippers alike, carrying more per trip then the 40' boxcars with the signode grain door. The Pennsylvania Railroad would purchase several thousand of this design. Due to production backlogs at P.S.C.Co. and flaws in the initial design, the Penny came up with its own all-steel, bottom-discharge hopper car in 1904 designated the GLa. Approximately 30,000 GLa’s were produced between 1904 and 1920. The Pennsy also built GLa’s for numerous coal companies who were anxious for the well-built and reasonably priced cars. Until the 1960’s, this design was one of the three most numerous classes of PRR freight cars. Although by this time, these cars began to rapidly disappear from the PRR roster, a few made it into the Penn Central and even Conrail rosters, lasting into the early 1980’s.

Product description from Bowser

Plastic Body with Trucks and Couplers - Ready To Run
Micro Trains® truck and coupler conversions:
Air Slide and Cylindrical Hopper Complete Truck 1035, Body Mount coupler #1023

Product description from Bowser

Plastic Body with Trucks and Couplers - Ready To Run
Micro Trains® truck and coupler conversions:
Air Slide and Cylindrical Hopper Complete Truck 1035, Body Mount coupler #1023

Product description from Bowser

Plastic Body with Trucks and Couplers - Ready To Run
Micro Trains® truck and coupler conversions:
Air Slide and Cylindrical Hopper Complete Truck 1035, Body Mount coupler #1023

Product description from Bowser

Plastic Body with Trucks and Couplers - Ready To Run
Micro Trains® truck and coupler conversions:
Air Slide and Cylindrical Hopper Complete Truck 1035, Body Mount coupler #1023
