During the early years of the industry freight was hauled on simple flatcars or early gondolas. In Upstate New York was the burgeoning Mohawk & Hudson Railroad, the first chartered system in the United States which later became part of the New York Central, came up with the novel idea of covering its gondolas in 1833 since the railroad dealt with snow throughout much of the winter. The car’s development continued to improve over the years such as switching from basic wood construction with steel outside-bracing, within the same size specifications; 40 feet, a standard size employed by the American Association of Railroads (AAR). To better enhance crew safety, in 1968 the AAR legislated the removal of roof walks. The 40 foot boxcars needed to be “modernized” to adhere to the AAR mandate. This was to be completed by 1978 for cars in interchange service. Some of these cars had side and end ladders cut down, in some cases, modification included lowering the brakewheel. What made boxcars great, at least in the eyes of the railroads, was, their ability to haul about anything! These cars were built to nearly identical designs, the primary difference being in the ends used. The 3900 cars in the earlier B-50-15 class used corrugated steel ends, while the 1003 cars in class B-50-16 used “Dreadnaught” ends. Both groups of cars used a variety of different roofs, with the Murphy radial roof and the Viking roof being the most common. In fact, nearly all B-50-16 received Viking roofs. Most of these cars were delivered with T-section trucks, though many were later upgraded with “Bettendorf”-style trucks.

Starting in the 1930s the Southern Pacific started a program of re-siding cars in both classes, replacing the wooden sides with steel sheet sides inside of the side bracing. This program continued on and off for many years, and not all cars were rebuilt. The steel sided cars in particular remained in service for many years, with 227 B-50-15 and 25 B-50-16 cars still in revenue service as late as 1970. Because of their antiquated looking construction, they really stood out in a train by that date.

Over the years these cars carried several versions of Southern Pacific paint schemes. These cars feature state-of-the-art tooling with separate grabs, crisp and accurate details and correct PRR class 2D-F1 arch-bar and 2D-F8 cast trucks with free-rolling turned metal wheelsets, two unique door styles, both KD- and AB-brake components, as well as two distinct roof types, all as appropriate.

In 1912 the Pennsylvania Railroad built its first 40-foot boxcar, the class X23. This single-sheathed car design utilized Warren-truss bracing and a fish belly underframe. These features, combined with its low roof height, gave the X23 a unique appearance which stood out in any train. PRR had over 7,000 X23s built between 1912 and 1914. They also had another 3,500 nearly identical looking R7 reefers built up to 1915.

The X23 boxcars served the PRR and its subsidiary railroads very well. Over the years various improvements were made including replacing the original roof with a lap-seam roof, 2D-F8 cast trucks replacing the original arch-bar trucks, KD-Brakes being upgraded with AB-brakes, and the 3-panel Creco door being replaced with a Youngstown corrugated door. The fleet of X23s continued to soldier on into World War 2 with over 90% of the fleet still in service by January 1945. However, their hard use during the war years combined with their age meant that most cars were retired from regular service by the late 1950s.
